Buying goods - your rights

Course outline

This course is for:

  • new consumer advisers who want a better understanding of how to use consumer legislation relating to the sale and supply of goods and services
  • experienced consumer advisers looking for a refresher course on how to use the legislation to achieve better outcomes for consumers
  • staff who support advisers providing consumer advice.

This course will look at the main implied terms of the Sale of Goods Act and explore how to use the remedies introduced by the 2002 regulations. In addition it will explore how a consumer’s rights and responsibilities are affected by the method of payment.

Learning objectives

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • distinguish between express and implied terms and their relative importance
  • identify the relevant statutory terms when advising on consumer law
  • describe what is meant by ‘satisfactory quality’ and ‘fitness for purpose’
  • explain the appropriate remedies for breach of consumer contracts to help consumers obtain redress
