Consumer contracts

Course outline

This course is for:

  • new consumer advisers who want a better understanding of how to approach complex consumer contracts.
  • experienced consumer advisers looking for a refresher course on how consumer law relates to contract and how to deal with breaches  
  • staff who support advisers providing consumer advice.

This course will focus on the contractual and statutory rights of consumers and how to apply these practically. The course will include:

  • identifying the relevant parties to the contract including the liability of credit providers, manufacturers and warranty providers
  • checking consumers’ right to cancel and the effect of the lack of statutory information  
  • how to distinguish between express and implied terms and assessing damages for breach
  • challenging unfair contract terms

Learning objectives

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • identify the relevant contractual and statutory terms when advising on consumer law
  • assess breach of contract claims and how to challenge other statutory breaches.

Please note that this course is a revised version of a previous course run called “Giving Better Consumer Advice”
