Introduction to welfare benefits

Course outline

This course will give a broad introduction to the range of welfare benefits available. Suitable for those with little or no prior experience of the benefits system, but who are required to give in-depth advice to clients and maximise income through means-tested and non means-tested benefits.

Learning objectives

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • differentiate between means-tested and non means-tested benefits
  • maximise benefit entitlement
  • challenge decisions
  • identify the key qualifying conditions for income support, job seekers allowance, pension credit, housing benefit and council tax benefit, tax credits, incapacity for work and disability benefits, social fund payments
