About Big Energy Saving Week

Big Energy Saving Week took place in October 2012 as a collaboration between Citizens Advice, Energy Saving Trust, Government, energy suppliers and other voluntary and charitable organisations. The main aim of the week is bring together consumers with all the advice and assistance that is out there in relation to their fuel bills.

Below is a list of the main partner organisations who ere involved in the week.

British Gas is the UK’s leading energy supplier, providing gas and electricity, boiler installation and repair, smart meters and a host of other services to millions of customers in Scotland, Wales and England. We’re also one of the largest installers of energy efficiency products, installing over 400,000 insulation measures in Britain’s homes last year alone. We are pleased to be supporting Big Energy Saving Week - it's important that customers know about the ways their energy supplier and other organisations can help them to save energy and reduce their energy costs. We'll be working with local Citizens Advice Bureaux and through our normal customer service teams during Big Energy Saving Week, making sure that customers are on the best deal for them, and that they have done all they can to save energy at home.

npower is a leading gas and electricity supplier, part of the RWE global energy group providing a range of products and services to suit the needs of customers.  npower is a key supporter of Big Energy Week and is keen to support the Citizens Advice Bureau's aim of engaging with the public about energy and ways to reduce bills and save carbon.  npower has a freephone Energy Efficiency line and will be supporting local CAB offices providing Head Office staff as volunteers helping to talk to the public throughout the week.

For the Big Energy Saving Week we committed ourselves to train 1,500 advisors and volunteers at 14 locations across the UK, the key deliverable being to impart on advisors the necessary information to provide advice and help to consumers with their energy bills, and make them aware of what they can do to reduce their costs.

Energy Saving Trust gives impartial, accurate and independent advice to communities and households on how to reduce carbon emissions, how to use water more sustainably and how to save money on energy bills. Through Big Energy Saving Week we aim to help householders that are ‘feeling the pinch’ and having difficulty paying their energy bills by providing them with independent and impartial advice about what they can do, as well as pointing them to the appropriate sources of help.

The Home Heat Helpline is a free, impartial and confidential service that provides advice on managing energy bills for people on low incomes or in poor health. You can speak to a friendly, expert advisor who can give you advice on rebates, grants and the basic steps you can take to save money on your energy bills by making your home more energy efficient.


Consumer Focus

Consumer Focus is the statutory consumer champion for England, Wales, Scotland and (for postal consumers) Northern Ireland. Energy costs are consistently one of consumers’ top concerns and millions of households are living in fuel poverty. So it is essential campaigns like Big Energy Saving Week help customers to find the best ways to save money and keep their homes warm.

Age UK

Age UK is the new force combining Age Concern and Help the Aged, dedicated to improving later life.

We provide free information, advice and support to over six million people; commercial products and services to well over one million customers; and research and campaign on the issues that matter to people in later life. Our work focuses on five key areas: money matters, health and well being, home and care, work and training and leisure and lifestyle. We work with our national partners, Age Scotland, Age Cymru and Age NI (together the Age UK Family), our local Age UK partners in England and local Age Concerns. We also work internationally for people in later life as a member of the DEC and with our sister charity Help Age International

Ofgem logo

Ofgem’s main priority is to protect energy consumers now and in the future. We do this by regulating the pipe and wire network companies and overseeing the energy market, promoting competition as appropriate.

National Energy Action

National Energy Action (NEA) is the national charity which aims to eradicate fuel poverty and campaigns for greater investment in energy efficiency to help those who are poor and vulnerable. NEA will be supporting BESW activities through providing fuel debt training and advice surgeries to some local CABs; developing and issuing an updated Fuel Poverty Advice Guide, which provides step-by-step advice on how to identify and assist those that may be in fuel poverty; and generally promoting the key BESW messages to media, members, and other key stakeholders.

Energy UK

Energy UK has been formed by merging the Association of Electricity Producers, the Energy Retail Association, and the UK Business Council for Sustainable Energy to form an organisation of over 70 members. It covers a broad spectrum of the energy industry and includes companies of all sizes working in electricity generation, networks and gas and electricity supply, as well as a number of business that provide equipment and services to the industry. Our members generate more than 90% of UK electricity and supply up to 26 million homes.  

Energy UK runs a number of important initiatives on behalf of industry including a Carbon Monoxide awareness campaign and the Home Heat Helpline which provides advice for people worried about paying their energy bills. Energy UK is pleased to support Big Energy Saving Week as it’s a useful way of reaching people who may need help with their energy bills this winter.
