Citizens Advice service equality and diversity strategy
Stand up for equality
If not us, who? If not now, when?
Citizens Advice service equality and diversity strategy 2012-15
The Citizens Advice service is fully committed to stand up and speak up for those who face inequality and disadvantage. In the present environment there is a clear and urgent role for the Citizens Advice service to play on equality – a role which is consistent with our aims and principles. The Stand up for equality strategy sets out how we can do that in Citizens Advice and in bureaux through our commitment to challenging discrimination, promoting equality and valuing diversity.
Why us?
Feedback from the public during the consultation on the strategy made it very clear that people often see us as their last hope for justice. They want to be able to turn to us for help on equality problems. They want us to stand up for them.
The need for us to play that role is best summarised by the Stand up for equality strapline: If not us, who? If not now, when?
Overall aims and priorities
To drive the necessary change we will focus on three target areas of work:
- challenge discrimination through advice
- promote equality through advocacy
- value diversity through our roles of employer, volunteer agency and contractor.
Further details and information about the implementation of the strategy will be made available during 2012.
Equality and diversity forum
Citizens Advice belongs to the Equality and diversity forum which is the network of national organisations committed to progress on age, disability, gender, race, religion and belief, sexual orientation and broader equality and human rights issues:
Archive of previous equality work
The forerunner to Stand up for equality was the FAIR strategy, which came to an end in 2011. The annual report for the final year of the FAIR strategy consists of:
- the work of the Equal Opportunities Committee (EOC), which has oversight of the Citizens Advice equality and diversity strategy
- progress against equality and diversity key performance indicators
- progress on the Citizens Advice 2010/11 corporate equality action plan.
This document is made available as part of our commitment to openness and transparency. Citizens Advice pays ‘due regard’ to equality in all its activities in a way which, although it does not apply to us, is within the spirit of the Equality Act 2010 public sector equality duty:
The 2009/10 Equality action plan sets out what Citizens Advice is doing to implement its FAIR equality and diversity strategy:
Citizens Advice equality scheme 2005-08
The equality scheme laid out what each part of the organisation would do to put FAIR into practice from 2005 - 2008. The review of the equality scheme highlights the many areas where we made progress and those where we did not:
The Citizens Advice equality scheme review describes the progress we made on our equality objectives between 2005-08:
