Welcome from the Prime Minister to the winter issue of The Citizen

Welcome to the winter issue of The Citizen. I am a huge supporter of the work Citizens Advice does across the country to solve problems and change countless lives for the better, and wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you.

Particularly after Christmas and new year, when family finances are stretched, rising energy prices are a major issue for consumers. Many people are worried about how they will afford to keep warm at home this winter. That is why in October I called together consumer groups, energy suppliers and Ofgem to agree a range of measures to make gas and electricity bills more manageable.

It is really important we work together to help people keep their bills down. The Citizens Advice service already does a fantastic job both nationally and locally through its work on public awareness campaigns and by helping people get the most from their supplier or switch to a cheaper supplier.

We can do more together. So am pleased that the Citizens Advice service coordinated Big Energy Week between 16 and 21 January (see pages 4-5). During the week energy companies, switching sites and community organisations held events across the country to get information and advice to consumers about what help is available and how to access it.

No one should pay more than they have to for their energy. Households on low incomes should get all the financial help to which they are entitled. The coordinated approach of Big Energy Week should have helped make this a reality.

I hope you enjoy this issue.
