Housing benefit cuts - have your say

Fair Welfare campaign logo

The proposed cuts to Housing Benefit (HB) and local housing allowance (LHA), announced in the Government’s 2010 Budget and Comprehensive Spending Review, will affect the majority of housing benefit claimants in some way.

These cuts could have a serious impact on some people, creating a shortfall in housing benefit payments. We are concerned that this could lead to debt, poverty and homelessness.

We have produced a template letter so you can let your MP know how the proposed cuts could affect you. If you are between 25 and 35, and claim LHA, you may have your benefit reduced to the Shared Room Rate. Write to your MP to let them know how this change could affect you using this template letter.

Guidance on sending a letter to your MP about Housing Benefit

This letter is designed to be a template for you to use and change to fit your personal story:

The letters have suggested text in black, but also has advice and suggestions for you in red, to help you explain your personal situation. The text in red is meant to prompt you, and should be removed before sending the letter.

Fill in as much detail as you can, but feel free to change the letter to suit you.

Your MP should send an acknowledgement of having received your letter, and they may agree to take some action on your behalf. This is not guaranteed and will depend on your MP and their interests and responsibilities.
