To raise awareness of the Equality Act 2010 to the public, the different forms of discrimination, inform people of their rights and promote equality.

About the Equality Act

The Equality Act simplifies and strengthens discrimination law by bringing together previous legislation into a single Act and extending protection from discrimination to more people than before.

Some of the new measures include protection for many carers from discrimination (as part of new protection from discrimination by association), dual discrimination (direct discrimination because of a combination of two protected characteristics - age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation), increased protection for disabled people from discrimination and stronger public equality duties.

The provisions in the Equality Act will come into force at different times, but the main ones will begin on 1 October 2010.

Advice on discrimination issues

In 2009/10, Citizens Advice Bureaux dealt with over 28,000 discrimination issues and received 20,146 enquiries about domestic violence. Thirty-one per cent of Citizens Advice Bureaux are hate crime reporting centres and/or involved in hate incidents monitoring scheme.
