Citizens Advice

The Citizens Advice service helps people resolve their legal, money and other problems by providing free, independent and confidential advice, and by influencing policymakers.

Every Citizens Advice Bureau is a registered charity reliant on trained volunteers and funds to provide these vital services for local communities.

Housing

Citizens Advice regularly responds to consultations using examples of CAB clients' problems. We use this evidence to campaign for changes in policies and services.

The Citizens Advice service dealt with 399,000 housing problems in 2007/08, many of which were related to housing debt. A growing number of people experience a shortfall between the benefits they receive and the cost of the rent or mortgage they have to pay. This can result in arrears, possession and homelessness for those in all housing sectors.

In partnership with Shelter, Citizens Advice runs the (New window) National Homelessness Advice Service, a government funded project, which provides specialist support on homelessness and housing issues to CAB advisers.
