Older people’s project

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is funding a programme of financial capability training for frontline workers who work with older people. It has previously supported similar work aimed at migrant workers.

Pilot phase

A successful pilot in 2006-7 developed two sets of financial capability training materials on tax and related issues. The materials were aimed at frontline workers working with older people and frontline workers supporting migrant workers, so they in turn could help their clients. The pilot also included grant funding to selected bureaux across England, Wales and Scotland to train local frontline workers using the materials.

Current phase

For the period 2007-10, HMRC extended funding for the older people's programme to enable a roll-out to further bureaux. The aim is to train at least 500 frontline practitioners over the period up to April 2010.

By the end of the second year of the three-year programme we have already reached 435 practitioners. In the second year training has been delivered in the areas of Inverness, Trafford, Southend, Rochford, Rayleigh, Castle Point, Liverpool, Forest of Dean and Gloucestershire, Havering and Sheffield.

Those reached this year include:

The third year of the programme is due to start in October 2009 and run till March 2010 after selection of bureaux in September.

Annually updated materials are available to all bureaux and to members of our regional financial capability forums on request.
