Training support services

“The course was excellent in that
it has equipped me with skills needed
to plan and deliver effective financial
capability sessions.”
“The materials provided by Citizens
Advice have been incredibly useful.”
“One of my strengths following the
information I received during the course
is understanding and managing the
practicalities of (planning and delivering)
a (financial capability) session.”
“I have had other training experience
in presentation but this was by far the
most useful and inspiring.”
Since 2002 we have been working with our key partner, Prudential, to provide a national financial capability training and learning support service for bureaux.
We want to equip all bureaux with the tools and skills to be able to deliver engaging and effective financial skills training. Our training service helps bureaux and their partners by providing a range of training materials, skills programmes and tools.
Training skills programme
Our group training skills programme runs up to ten times a year. It improves the confidence and skills of new financial skills trainers to plan, deliver and evaluate financial skills sessions with adults. The programme includes pre-course work, three days of group training and tailored tutor feedback on session planning and delivery.
Thanks to support from Citi Foundation, training is free and accessible to bureaux through travel bursaries. Financial skills trainers who are active members of their financial capability forum and/or members of TRANSACT can also apply for a place and a bursary to cover fees and/or travel costs.
Citizens Advice Bureaux volunteers can also access our in-house e-learning training module. This introduces them to the role of financial capability in the service and has been developed as part of our MoneyActive project.
Training materials
Our training materials can be used ‘off the shelf’ by new and experienced trainers. They comply with Citizens Advice quality requirements so trainers can deliver their sessions with confidence.
We have produced a wide range of materials, including taster sessions. Most are designed to be used over a two hour slot, covering topics such as budgeting, choosing credit and basic banking.
We have also contributed to partnership projects that have involved sharing or co-writing materials. These include materials:
- aimed at adults with learning disabilities through our joint work with MENCAP
- on how to get the best energy deal, developed with OFGEM, the energy regulator.
Most materials are available free to bureaux and other partners who are active forum members.
For further information please contact your local financial capability forum co-ordinator.
Tutor development
Through investment by Santander Foundation we have worked with bureaux to develop a range of self-assessment and quality tools. These are helping bureau trainers deliver their training to a consistent and good standard.
Citi Foundation has also supported us to put in place follow-on development opportunities for group training skills participants. These include one to one after course practice support and a peer mentoring scheme.
