Scams and frauds cost people millions every year, causing misery and distress. People can lose their life savings, find themselves with crippling debts and experience mental health problems.
Scams survey: our findings
In 2011 Citizens Advice carried out a survey of our clients and members of the public to find out which scams people were most concerned about. Top three concerns were:
- Switching scams (where you end up paying more instead of less)
- Debt advice firms that charge you and don’t sort out your debts
- Prizes: where you pay fees and 'taxes' up front, but there’s never any prize
