Citizens Advice supports global movement against inequality at Pride 2012

5 July 2012

As Pride London hosts World Pride 2012 with the theme of ‘Global equality for LGBT people’, Citizens Advice volunteers will be sharing advice at a number of events around the country on how to handle issues that still affect many in the LGBT community in this country.

People in England and Wales have more legal rights to equality than many in other countries, but we still see evidence of hate crime and discrimination against LGBT people in the UK.

Citizens Advice has produced a Top Tips leaflet on how to tackle discrimination of every kind, and will be on hand to talk to people at the following Pride events this year:

  • London World Pride Parade – 7 July
  • Leeds – 5 August
  • Brighton – 1 September

Gillian Guy, Chief Executive at Citizens Advice says:

“Citizens Advice is here for everyone. We hope to talk to lots of people at the 2012 Pride events about how Citizens Advice Bureaux can help them learn about their rights, and how to exercise them. We’ll be providing information on a wide range of issues including how to tackle unfair treatment, discrimination or hate incidents.

“People can also learn how they can take better control of their finances, deal with difficult relationship issues such as escaping abusive relationships, and how they can get along better with anti-social neighbours, as well as finding out about volunteering opportunities at the CAB."

In 2010/11, Citizens Advice Bureaux in England and Wales helped people with around 28,500 discrimination enquiries – this represented a 25 per cent increase since 2007/08.

Citizens Advice is committed to equality and diversity, and the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual (LGBT) communities. It is one of only four voluntary organisations to appear in Stonewall’s Workplace Equality Index 2012 as one of the top 100 gay-friendly employers.
