Claims firm checker will help people avoid unscrupulous companies

7 Mehefin 2013

More can be done to protect consumers from claims management companies says Citizens Advice as the Ministry of Justice launches an online tool for consumers to check if claims firms are subject to investigation.

Citizens Advice Chief Executive Gillian Guy said:

“Predatory claims management companies are ripping off people by not being clear about how much their services cost and charge up-front fees without gaining any compensation.  You can’t switch on a TV or radio without hearing about a claims firm, so it is good the Ministry of Justice is helping consumers identify the firms who are under investigation.  But people could be further protected if the regulator banned firms from cold calling, made sure fees are in proportion to the compensation gained and end up-front fees.

“You don’t have to use a claims management company to make a claim for mis-sold Payment Protection Insurance.  You can do it for free by going direct to your bank, that way you get to keep all of the compensation gained.”

Citizens Advice has online advice to help you make a claim for mis-sold PPI including a template letter you can use to send to your bank.
