Letter to the Competition and Markets Authority on the proposed merger of SSE retail and npower
The Competition and Markets Authority is considering whether the proposed merger between SSE’s retail arm and npower should be allowed. As part of its consideration, it asked interested parties to send written representations about any competition issues that it should take into account.
In our submission, we suggested it should consider any impacts that consolidation might have on how concentrated the national market for standard variable tariffs is, and to consider any regional impacts in North Scotland or South Wales that might be caused by the merged company having a majority market share in those regions.
