75th birthday parliamentary reception

On Wednesday 4 June Gillian Guy, Chief Executive of Citizens Advice welcomed over 100 guests to celebrate the 75th birthday of the Citizens Advice service with a reception in the House of Commons Members’ Dining Room.

The reception, which took place during Volunteers’ Week, was sponsored by HSBC and was attended by around 50 MPs and Peers, staff and volunteers from the Citizens Advice service and a number of  partner organisations.

Stephen Lloyd MP, Co-Chair of the Citizens Advice APPG hosted the reception and spoke about how the “CAB has tremendous respect from everyone”.

Addressing the reception, Jenny Willott MP, Employment Relations and Consumer Affairs Minister, thanked CAB volunteers and said the amount of knowledge they have is “phenomenal”.

Parliamentarian of the year awards

The Citizens Advice Parliamentarian of the Year Award 2014 were also presented at the reception. The award recognises MPs that the charity has worked closely with in Parliament and in their constituencies, to deliver real change for our clients.  

Trophies were handed to Robin Walker MP and Paul Blomfield MP, who have championed the need for better regulation of payday lenders on the Business, Innovation and Skills Select Committee.

Yvonne Fovargue MP also accepted a special award on behalf of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Debt and Personal Finance, which as a group has campaigned on the issue of payday lending and debt management companies for many years.

Advice for the future campaign

At the event, Citizens Advice also asked guests to pledge their support for Citizen’s Advice’s new campaign ‘Advice for the future’ which aims to highlight the importance of free, impartial advice.
