Health inequalities: good advice, good health and a good society

We are conducting research with the support of the Health Foundation on how social and economic issues impact health inequalities. We will draw upon the expertise of, and data collected by, our local network to better understand the factors affecting health outcomes at the individual level - and explore the role advice can play in improving outcomes. All of the project's outputs are available below.

Research themes

We are aiming to conduct research and influence policy across three broad themes:

  • Economic activity. Our first report on this theme examines how our clients’ health is shaped by their experiences in and out of work, and how differences in resources and support available are driving unequal outcomes.

  • Housing. Our second report looks at the different ways in which our clients' housing situations have impacted their health, across the private rented sector, social housing, and temporary accommodation. It identifies areas where government action is needed to ensure that the benefits of their housing reforms are felt as widely as possible.

  • Poverty (TBC)

Data visualisation

We are establishing a new quantitative data dashboard (coming soon) to collate what we know about health outcomes for people who come to Citizens Advice for support with health-related benefits.

We will also regularly update our qualitative storybank, compiling the client case studies generated throughout the project:
