Citizens Advice responds to E.ON replacing standard variable tariffs

Citizens Advice has responded to the announcement that energy supplier E.ON will replace its standard variable tariff with a rolling, fixed term default tariff.

Citizens Advice Chief Executive, Gillian Guy, said:

“It’s a positive sign that E.ON has recognised that standard variable tariffs have had their day. However this must not become a situation of one bad deal replacing another. E.ON needs to be absolutely transparent about the costs of any rolling fixed deal, and also be clear with customers about what happens when the fixed period ends.

“But while statements of this nature are encouraging, it is essential that Ofgem acts to cap the cost of energy for the most vulnerable in society. The government and Ofgem also need to stand ready to introduce a wider-ranging price cap to protect all loyal customers stuck paying over the odds for their gas and electricity if energy companies fail to act."
