Citizens Advice urges workers check their payslip at Christmas

18 December 2016

Citizens Advice encouraging people to check their payslips this Christmas time to make sure they're paid correctly for all the hours they work over the festive season.

Over the last year:

  • Citizens Advice helped 200,00 people with 340,000 employment issues.

  • Over 60,000 people who experienced issues with their pay and entitlements at work turned to us for help.

  • We helped 14,000 people with issues relating to their pay or payslip. It’s also a popular topic online, with over 21,000 views per month of our advice on what to do if you are experiencing difficulties getting paid.

Gillian Guy, Chief Executive of Citizens Advice, said:

“For some people getting a day’s wage for a day’s work is not guaranteed.

“Many workers will have put in lots of extra hours in the run up to Christmas, and it’s important to make sure you’re paid for it all.

“To make sure you’re paid what you’re owed, keep track of all the hours you work and check your payslip carefully. If you think you’ve not been paid right speak to your boss first- it could just be a mistake. But if you’re worried your employer might be trying to short-change you Citizens Advice can help you with what to do next.

“Thousands of people turn to Citizens Advice every year about problems with their pay. It’s good news that the government is investing in making sure people get paid the wage they’ve earned. But we’d like to see further action to increase enforcement across other employment rights - like sick pay and maternity leave - and lower Employment Tribunal fees so workers can challenge  exploitative bosses.”
