Funding for early help and refuges vital to tackle domestic abuse

8 March 2016

Citizens Advice has today said that it is good news the £80million of funding pledged by the Government for the next four years will help tackle domestic abuse earlier and make sure those who need it have access to emergency accommodation, including refuges.

Gillian Guy, chief executive of Citizens Advice, said:

“The right support can help put an end to domestic abuse.

“Last year Citizens Advice helped over five thousand people who experienced domestic abuse, including physical violence and being forced to account for all their movements or spending.  Being able to get the right support - whether that’s a place in a refuge, emergency housing or counselling - can help people out of abusive relationships and to move on with their lives.

“It is good news that the Government’s increased funding to tackle domestic abuse will help stop abuse at the earliest opportunity while also making sure victims can get emergency housing, including a space at a refuge, when they need it.

“To help victims as early as possible, it is important that everyone, from professionals to family members, understand how to identify domestic abuse and access support.”
