Government review must look at tackling all forms of domestic abuse

7 July 2015

Citizens Advice has today called for the Government to make sure its review to tackle domestic violence helps victims of all types of abuse. The national charity has also welcomed extra funding to support victims, after the Chancellor announced that he will commit a further £3.2m in tomorrow’s Budget toward refuges.

Gillian Guy, chief executive of Citizens Advice, said:

"Domestic abuse ruins lives. That’s why the Chancellor’s commitment to fund services helping victims of domestic abuse and review how the Government tackles abuse is very welcome.

"Citizens Advice helps around 13,000 victims of domestic abuse every year, from those who have suffered physical attacks and mental torture as well as people whose life is restricted because their partner controls all of their money.

“It is a real challenge for both professionals and the public to identify when someone may be in an abusive relationship and get them help before their life is threatened. We want more people to be better equipped to know what steps to take.

“It is important the review makes sure victims of all types of domestic abuse get the support required and we look forward to working with the Government to achieve this.”
