Volunteer with our Witness Service
We’re looking for volunteers who have a friendly, mature and empathetic manner towards others. You need to have good listening and verbal communication skills. We’re also looking for people who are non-judgemental and impartial in supporting all people, and who have the confidence to support vulnerable people and people with specific needs.
Who can apply?
We have over 2,800 highly trained volunteers who come from a wide range of backgrounds. They’re on hand to help witnesses feel valued, respected and able to give their best evidence in court. Could you be a part of our story in your community?
Want to join our team?
We have opportunities in England and Wales. You’ll get full training, support and accreditation - and a warm welcome.
You can apply if you’re 18 years old or over. You’ll also need to commit to:
- at least 12 months (if you’re studying we can talk about what happens during the holidays)
- undergo an enhanced DBS clearance
Or you can complete the application form in Welsh.
About our roles
There are 2 volunteering roles in the Witness Service.
As a court based volunteer, you’ll support witnesses and their friends and family when they come to court. You’ll give them practical information about the process, as well as emotional support to help witnesses feel more confident when giving evidence.
You’ll be needed during normal court hours (9am to 5pm). Take a look at the full court-based volunteer role profile to find out more.
Or we have a Welsh version of the Court-based volunteer role profile here .
As an outreach volunteer, you’ll support witnesses who feel vulnerable or intimidated by meeting them in a safe place like their home, a school or community centre.
You’ll need to be flexible with your availability - outreach visits can take place in the evenings until 6.30pm or on Saturday mornings until 11.30am. Take a look at the outreach volunteer role profile to find out more or read our blog to about what it’s like to be an outreach volunteer.
Why volunteer with us?
|“Bringing out the best in yourself by helping someone through what may be the most difficult day in their life: the reward is greater than any payment.”
Peter - Caernarfon
"Volunteering for the Witness Service came at a time when my life had reached an all-time low. I received amazing support and encouragement from my manager as well as other volunteers, and have made some friends along the way. My confidence has grown and I love meeting new people every time I go to work and knowing I'm helping someone through an ordeal."
