Check if you're affected by an energy price cap

This advice applies to Scotland

Energy price caps limit the amount you can be charged by your supplier for each unit of energy you use. Even if you're affected you'll usually be able to save more money by switching to a cheaper deal.

Your energy price will normally be capped if you either:

  • have a prepayment meter
  • get the Warm Home Discount and you're on a 'default tariff' - this is a tariff you didn't choose to sign up to

If you're on a default tariff your energy price will be capped from 1 January 2019.

If you're not sure if your energy price is being capped you can call your supplier to check.

How energy price caps work

Energy price caps don't limit your total bill - you'll still pay more if you use more energy.

If you're eligible for a price cap you don't need to do anything - it will be applied automatically by your supplier.

If you aren't affected by a price cap

You'll usually be paying a better rate for your energy already - but it's still worth checking if you could save more by switching.
