ONS data show young people “hit hard” by recession says Citizens Advice

21 January 2014

The Chief Executive of national charity, Citizens Advice, has warned that “young people have been hit hard by the recession” as new ONS data show that a record number of young people are living with their parents.

Citizens Advice Chief Executive, Gillian Guy, said:

“Young people have been hit hard by the recession. Since the start of the downturn Citizens Advice Bureaux have seen a 53 per cent increase the number of young people seeking help.

“The challenges of finding work and affordable housing go hand in hand and are especially tough for young people trying to enter the job market. Since 2007 the number of people aged seventeen to twenty-four seeking our advice on rent arrears to housing associations has gone up 56 per cent, whilst the number needing help on Jobseekers’ Allowance has more than doubled.

“Young people visiting our bureaux want a hand-up not a hand-out. It’s vital that young people get support in finding employment. Failing to invest now in supporting young people into work and secure housing will not just damage the individuals involved but make it harder for the country to pay for the ballooning costs of pensions and social care.”
