Get help with your energy debt

This advice applies to Scotland

If you’re in debt to your energy supplier, you might be able to get a grant from a charitable trust to help pay it off. You won’t need to pay back the grant.

Before you apply

To get help from a grant, you’ll need to be able to show you’re on a low income - usually less than £16,190 - and that you can’t afford to pay off the debt.

You’re more likely to get a grant if you can show you’ve already tried to pay off the debt yourself. If you think you’re eligible, get debt advice from your nearest Citizens Advice before you apply. An adviser can help you understand how to manage debt better, and make you more likely to get a grant.

You can also get help with your application at your nearest Citizens Advice,

Check if your supplier offers grants

If your supplier offers a grant to their customers, it’s best to apply directly to them.

It might take a while to complete your application, and you'll need details of your finances. If you need to, you can contact your nearest Citizens Advice to get help filling in the form.
