Step 2: Check if you can get any grants or benefits

This advice applies to Scotland

You might be able to get extra money to put towards your energy bills or to make your home more energy efficient.

If you’re already in debt to your supplier, check if you can get help paying off your energy debts.

Check what you can claim

The help you can get depends on your circumstances - the 3 main benefits are:

  • Winter Fuel Payment - a yearly payment towards your energy bill
  • Cold Weather Payments - a one off payment to cover bills when it’s cold
  • Warm Home Discount Scheme - a £140 discount on your electricity bill

You might also be able to get money towards making your home more energy efficient. For example money off a new boiler or better insulation.

Use the energy grants calculator on GOV.UK to find out exactly what help you can get and apply online.

If you get the Warm Home Discount

Your energy tariff will be ‘capped’. This means your supplier won’t charge you more than a certain amount for the gas or electricity you use - this amount depends on:

  • where you live
  • the type of meter you have
